Tyser Tower Expansion – University of Maryland, Byrd Stadium

The Tyser Tower renovation and expansion at the University of Maryland’s Byrd Stadium significantly transformed the facility, nearly tripling its size. The project included a complete renovation of the existing tower, modernizing home and visiting team facilities, upgrading food services, and introducing a 214-seat President’s Lounge. The existing roof was removed and replaced with a structural steel system, creating 701 new spectator seats on the Concourse level.

A fully enclosed fifth-level workspace was added, providing accommodations for 148 journalists, scoring and statistician personnel, and high-definition broadcast booths. The expansion also introduced twin five-story additions that flank the existing structure. While the buildings are structurally independent, they function cohesively as a single architectural unit, increasing the facility’s capacity with 4,000 additional spectator seats.

To support the new exterior seating, the project team implemented an innovative structural system. Massive steel frames on the fifth floor anchor 3 ½-inch diameter steel rods that suspend new tiered seating platforms over the third and fourth floors. This design ensures structural integrity while seamlessly integrating with the stadium’s existing architecture. The result is a modernized, high-capacity facility that enhances both the spectator experience and the stadium’s operational efficiency.
